Discapline
December 22nd, 2009Am I the only one who thinks getting in shape kinda stinks? I have neglected my self for about three years… No exercise and terrible eating habits (eating late is the bain of my belly). However, recently my wife and I have a challenge to each other…. who will do better in an Olympic distance triathlon! Uh Oh … my wife did a half marathon not too long ago… that’s trouble! It Has taken me a month just to get to the point of a slow jog, my shins have been killing me.
But I must say that I’m feeling stronger and its not quite so terrible, I’m actually pretty motivated. It’s fun to see the work pay off. It got me to thinking… Why is it that discipline begets more discipline, where self indulgence just makes me more self indulgent? Denying my self has made me more aware of just how much my walk with God requires self denial. The question of “why” has led me to this conclusion… Self denial requires faith, self indulgence not so much! What about you? Is God asking for a little self denial? What is that producing in you? Is it drawing you to him? Are you at the painful beginning or the joyful fruit bearing stage? love to hear your thoughts!

I think this would be a great message for anyone to tell you the truth. And I know how it feels. Getting in shape physically is hard, and even harder to get in shape mentally and spiritually. Makes me come back to the calling of Simon, how he just dropped his fishing net and followed Jesus. Now THAT is some spirtual in-shape-ness(if thats a word).

I’m at the painful beginning, but thanks for the encouragment. I need it. I’ve been feeling the pull for much more self discipline.

Holidays killed me… although still exercising, the intake of junky food, in large quantities, late at night, tend to undermine the achievement of exercise goals. This got me to thinking about my spiritual growth and what plan I have for it… in terms of time in the word (perhaps reading in places that I tend to gravitate away from)… The other question has come to mind, “what are some habits in my life that have been preventing me from growing spiritually?” Needless to say i have begun a new study regimen along with my exercise and quite frankly, Im loving it, and feeling very quenched after a long thirst.

Don’t forget that proper STRETCHING is also key to health. Stretching will help the body rid the muscles of lactic acid and other cellular wastes faster after exercising. Also helps reduce fatigue (ask John W), keeps joints mobile and muscles flexible. Good luck!
